Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, is an American musician and rapper. Queen Latifah's career in music film and television has resulted in her receiving an Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award and six more Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born in and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. a police officer. Latifah's parents divorced when she was 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic school, and she was educated within Newark New Jersey. She was a member of at the Baptist church. Latifah refers to gentle and kind. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was 8. Latifah's 5'10" height made her a powerful forward in high school. She sang the song"Home" from the musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah began to beatbox with the women's fresh rap group. Latifah was one of the members of the original model of the Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised composed of MCs and producers led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The song was sent to host Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. The track caught the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and in 1988 issued her first track Wrath of My Madness.
