April Ross
April Ross was one of just a handful of women beach volleyball stars who won medals at more than one Olympics. In Tokyo during the next few days, she'll try to claim her third Olympic medal alongside first-time Olympian Alix Klineman. But more than that, Ross hopes to win her first Olympic gold. At 39 she could have her final chance. Nevertheless, she remains convinced of winning top awards. Ross, via NBC Boston, said that If the team is performing well or at all they could win a gold. "I'm planning to test some luck." Ross was born in 1982 in Costa Mesa California where she lived with her parents as well as a her sister. She went on to compete in numerous activities at Newport Harbor High School. As a prep-athlete she was also a participant in indoor volleyball and track. She was clearly the best player in indoor volleyball. According to her bio her high school days, she was a volleyball player as an outside setter (middle blocker) as well as a setting (outside blocker). To honor her achievements she was awarded the Gatorade Award for National Player 1999. In 2000, she received her the Orange County Athlete of the of the year for volleyball. Ross and Klineman started the partnership in 2017, However, Ross has been a beach star for years before. In fact, she won multiple major tournaments using two partners, one of whom is the volleyball legend. Jennifer Kessy was her partner during six years from 2007 until the year 2013. She also worked with Klineman as well as herself. Along with Kessy, Ross won an Olympic Title in 2009, while racing in the international circuit. The duo took silver in London's Olympic Games. They were beaten out for the gold by the legendary team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh (Jennings). Ross Jennings was May-Treanor's replacement after she had retired. The pair won bronze in the Rio Olympics for beach volleyball. Ross competed for USC Trojans during her college days, prior to becoming a professional. She had a great run through the college. In 2000, she was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and NCAA Freshman Of The Year and an All-American. Additionally, she assisted her Trojans to reach the Final Four. Her sophomore year was the time she was devastated by a personal loss but still managed to repeat as an All-American. Over the course of her final two seasons, she took the Trojans up the mountain and won consecutive national titles. She was a fantastic volleyball player and won the Honda Sports Award in 2003-04 as the best female volleyball player in the NCAA. Ross was a major in the field of international relations in USC. Margie Ross, Ross' mother, never had the chance to watch her daughter become a beach volleyball superstar. In 2001 when Ross was in her sophomore year studying at USC her mother passed away due to breast cancer. She has kept her parents close to her his heart.
